LOOKING AFTER YOUR FEET

Verrucae

Verrucae are caused by the human papilloma virus.  Verrucae are essentially the same as warts, they are caused by the same virus.  When they appear on the foot they look flatter and broader than warts found on other parts of the body.  If in doubt about the diagnosis of the lesion on your foot seek a consultation with a podiatrist for a correct diagnosis and to discuss treatment options.

Verrucae are not harmful although occasionally they are painful if they press on sensitive parts of the foot.  Most of the time if left alone the verruca will go although it may take up to 2 years or more.

Before starting any treatment for verrucae, first consider the option of not treating.  Treatments are sometimes time consuming and occasionally painful.

Treatment options range from the do-it-yourself preparations that can be bought over the counter to cryosurgery or electrotherapy for surgical removal of the verruca.

Over the counter preparations can be effective if used regularly.  Doing it for a few days and then forgetting for the rest of the week will not produce results.

If you have tried the over the counter preparations and have not managed to get rid of the verruca or if your verruca is particularly painful and you wish to seek another solution to the problem then contact your podiatrist who will talk through the treatment options with you.
